The History of Starcraft - Part 5

Although the bold sacrifice of Tassadar had destroyed the Zerg Overmind, a countless number of uncontrollable, rampaging Zerg still remained on the surface of Aiur. Fearing for their safety and the perpetuation of their own race, the now shattered Conclave agree to evacuate to Shakuras, the adopted home planet of the Dark Templar order.

With the assistance of Jim Rayno and his men, the surviving Protoss fight a path through the marauding Zerg to reach an ancient Xel'naga warp gate. Using this gate, Zeratul opens a portal to another gate on Shakuras. Many manage to escape to safety through the gate, but others are left behind and fall prey to the Zerg while providing cover.

After escaping impending doom on Aiur, those who made it through the warp gate go to meet Raszagal, the Dark Templar Matriarch. The first item of business addressed relates to exterminating the Zerg that managed to follow them through the warp gate. Raszagal declares that a power Xel'naga temple could be used to cleanse the planet in one fell swoop, but would need to be powered by two long lost crystals know as the Khalis and the Uraj.

Shockingly, out of no where, Kerrigan arrives in orbit on her own. Telling the surviving mixed group of Protoss that she is no longer a vicious killer since she is not under the control of the now dead Overmind, she informs them that surviving cerebrate masses were in the process of merging and evolving to form a new Overmind. Offering to help, and against the advice of Zeratul and Artanis, Kerrigan joins the search for the missing crystals, starting on the planet Braxis.

While on Braxis, the search party locates the Uraj, and stumbles accross an unfamiliar Terran force calling itself the UED (United Earth Directorate). A brief conflict ensues, and the searching Protoss narrowly manage to escape with their prize.

After leaving Braxis, the Protoss use a series of clues to discern that the Khalis is on Char, dangerously close to the newly developing Overmind. In a daring retrieval, Kerrigan and the Protoss retrieve Khalis and make their way back to Shakuras.

Just when things are looking up, disaster strikes the battered group yet again. Upon arriving on Shakuras a civil war of sorts has broken out, with many of the Aiur evacuees having turned against the Dark Templars. With more than enough at stake already, Raszagal quickly orders the dissenters to be vanquished. Before being finished, the rebel leader claims that Raszagal is hiding a terrible secret, but he was never able to reveal his findings as Kerrigan and her Zerg party slay him where he stands.

After slaying the rebel leader an arguement ensues between Zeratul and Kerrigan, resulting in Kerrigan making the statement that she had already accomplished her goal on Shakuras, and would now leave peacefully. Although knowing that unleashing the power of the Xel'naga temple was somehow playing into Kerrigan's plans, the desperate Protoss have no choice but to do so anyway to cleanse their refuge on Shakuras from all Zerg corruption.
